What I would actually plan as a mom of two.
Baby showers are one of my favorite things to plan. I love the desserts and the balloon arches, but what I love most is that a good shower makes a mom-to-be feel celebrated right before her whole life changes. I have thrown these for friends and family for years, and the ones people still talk about are the ones that felt like her, head to toe, from the colors to the cake to the little note tucked into her chair.
So let’s have fun with it. Below is how I would plan a shower for a boy, a girl, twins, or a surprise, with the themes, the decorations I actually reach for, the gift and registry ideas, the games, and the small touches that make the day feel personal. Each theme links to a full guide when you want to go deeper.
Start with the feeling
Before I buy a single thing, I pick one feeling. Soft and romantic, warm and cozy, bright and joyful, or modern and earthy. Once I know the feeling, the palette and the theme fall into place and every choice after that gets easier. I also ask the mom about her colors, the food she is craving, and anything she does not want, and I pull in her partner for the details only they know, like her favorite dessert or a song that means something to them.
Then I build one show-stopping focal point and let it carry the room. Usually that is the dessert table or the gift table, dressed with a full balloon garland, a welcome sign, and a few centerpieces. You do not have to cover every inch, but you absolutely can go big where it counts. One gorgeous, photographed corner sets the tone for the whole party.

The decorations I actually reach for
This is my favorite part, so let’s do it justice. A handful of pieces create most of the wow, and they are the ones worth putting your energy and budget into.
- A big balloon garland behind the main table is the single biggest payoff for the effort. Match it to your palette: a sage and cream garland for a neutral or twin shower, a blush garland for a girl, or a soft blue and cream garland for a boy. I round mine out with a bag of extra latex balloons to fill any gaps, and a small helium tank when I want a few floating up above the table.
- A backdrop behind the main table turns a blank wall into the photo corner. Add foil letter and word balloons to spell out baby or the little one’s name, or hang a flower wall, which looks gorgeous in every single picture.
- A welcome sign at the entrance gives the party a clear starting point and your photos a hero shot.
- A set of little table signs for the welcome, guest book, food, and thank-you spots pulls the whole spread together.
- Coordinated tableware finishes the look. I match the plates, cups, napkins, cutlery, and a tablecloth to the palette so the food table reads as part of the decor.
- Centerpieces, fresh flowers or trailing greenery to finish the look.
Go as full and colorful as you want here. A beautiful room is part of the gift, and the mom deserves to walk in and gasp.
Baby shower ideas for a boy
I love a boy shower that feels rich and layered rather than one flat shade of blue. My favorite directions are a soft blue and cream palette, a cozy teddy bear theme, an outdoorsy adventure look in sage and tan, and a dressy little gentleman theme with navy and a shimmer of gold. Pile on the garland, the bear cookies, and a big welcome sign and let it feel abundant.

Baby shower ideas for a girl
A girl shower is my chance to go really pretty. Blush and cream with a lush floral garland, a garden theme with a flower bar guests love, a current bow theme, or a sweet little love theme with hearts. Layer the florals, the ribbon, and a gorgeous cake and lean all the way into it.

Gender-neutral baby shower ideas
Neutral does not mean plain. Cream, sage, and warm terracotta with brass and greenery looks stunning and works for a surprise baby or a mom who just loves an earthy palette. Baby in bloom and a book-themed shower are both beautiful here and easy to make personal.

Twin baby shower ideas
A twin shower is a celebration and a half, and I plan it that way. Two little cakes, two accent colors, a generous garland with gold letter balloons, and a gift table built for two. The one thing I add that a single-baby shower does not need is a registry nudge, because twin parents genuinely need double the daily supplies.

Gifts and the registry
Almost every mom sets up a registry these days, so the kindest thing you can do as a guest is check it first and buy from it. Everything on it is something she actually picked. As the host, I make the registry easy to find on the invitation and again with a little sign at the gift table.
If the parents have not built a registry yet, or you want to round one out with the everyday things they will burn through fastest, here is what really gets used. Start with the basics that vanish overnight:
- Diapers and wipes, the first thing any parent runs out of. Grab a box of diapers and a pack of baby wipes in whatever brand they like, and honestly no one has ever complained about too many.
- A multipack of plain cotton onesies, because newborns go through a few a day.
- A gentle baby wash and shampoo for those first little baths.
Then the reusable pieces that make everyday life easier:
- aden + anais Essentials Muslin Swaddle, 4-pack, the swaddle almost every parent ends up living in.
- Copper Pearl Premium Burp Cloths, 3-pack, thick enough that one actually does the job.
- Comotomo Baby Bottle Starter Set for families who plan to pump or combo feed.
- Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO baby monitor, a lovely gift for a few guests to go in on together.

For the big-ticket pieces, point guests to my best strollers guide and my best car seats guide. And because the shower is for the mom too, a care basket built around my prenatal vitamins guide is a thoughtful add.
Games I would actually use
I love games that are sweet and easy to play while people eat and visit, and an all-in-one set means you are not hunting for six separate ones. These party sets sell out and restock constantly, so here is a deep bench. Grab whichever are in stock and match your theme:
- Neatz 7-game gender-neutral set, a big variety with a measure-the-bump poster.
- A six-game set, a search that surfaces whatever variety is in stock.
- Hilarious 6-game rustic set, scaled for 25 to 75 guests.
- Party Hearty 5-game gold-foil set, pretty enough to match a dressier table.
- Hadley Designs greenery 4-game set, for a smaller crowd.
- Boho baby shower bingo and games, the classic bingo for gift opening with a few extra games.
- A big activity set with pacifier hunt and measure-the-belly, for games guests play throughout, not just at the table.
- Sweet Heart diaper raffle cards, 50 count, a game that doubles as a way to help the parents stock up.
If they all happen to be sold out on the day, this baby shower games search always shows what is in stock. Each themed guide also has picks tied to its palette.
Food, planned around the mom
I plan the menu around the mom first. What is she craving, what can she not eat, what smells bother her, and does she want a real meal or light bites. A brunch works beautifully with quiche, fruit, pastries, and sparkling lemonade. An afternoon shower is lovely with small sandwiches, salads, and cake. Then I dress the food table with the same palette and a matching tablecloth so it looks like part of the decor.
Treats and favors
Two little extras that make guests feel spoiled. A small display of treats on the dessert table gives everyone something sweet to nibble while they visit, and a stack of party favors by the door, even something tiny, sends people home feeling looked after. Match the wrappers and tags to your palette and you have one more photo-ready corner.
Bring in the partner
This is one of my favorite touches, and it is what turns a nice shower into an unforgettable one. Without spoiling the surprise, I ask the partner for her favorite dessert, a short note to read, a meaningful song, a few photos, the registry priorities, and a hand moving gifts afterward. Set out a pretty guest book so those notes and wishes have somewhere to live after the day. A shower built with the partner feels less like a party thrown at the mom and more like a celebration built around her whole life.
Dressing the guest of honor
The one thing that quietly stresses moms out is what to wear to their own shower. If she is still looking, send her to what to wear to your baby shower and the maternity clothes hub so she feels as gorgeous as the room. A few brands moms reach for:
- PinkBlush baby shower and occasion dresses, the go-to for a photo-ready bump.
- Hello Miz maternity dresses, soft, budget-friendly styles moms wear during and after.
What I would skip
- Food the pregnant mom cannot eat or does not like.
- Games that embarrass the mom or drag on too long.
- A schedule so packed she never gets to sit and enjoy her own party.
- Any final task that lands on the pregnant mom before or after the day. Keep a box of thank-you cards on the gift table so guests address their own envelopes, and that job is done before the party ends.
Make the room beautiful, feed her what she loves, play a game or two, guide guests toward gifts she will actually use, and tuck in one detail that is just for her. Whether you are planning for a boy, a girl, twins, or a surprise, start with her, go big on the parts that bring joy, and let the rest be simple.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a baby shower look impressive without doing too much?
Put your energy into one focal point. A full balloon garland, a welcome sign, and a few centerpieces behind the dessert or gift table create most of the wow.
What is the best baby shower gift?
If the parents have a registry, buy from it. If not, the everyday heroes are swaddles, burp cloths, and bottles, with a stroller, car seat, or monitor as a shared bigger gift.
How is a twin baby shower different?
It is just as festive, but the gift table leans practical because twin parents need double the daily supplies. Nudge guests toward the registry.
How do I involve the dad or partner without ruining the surprise?
Ask them for the small personal details only they know: her favorite dessert, a meaningful song, a few photos, and the registry priorities.
What should I skip at a baby shower?
Food the mom cannot enjoy, games that embarrass her, and a schedule so tight she never gets to sit down.
