Baby registries can spiral out of control fast. Walk through any baby store or click around online and you will find hundreds of products claiming to be essential. The reality: a newborn needs remarkably little. They need to be fed, kept warm, kept safe, and held. Everything else is either a nice convenience or a genuine waste of money.
This guide separates the true essentials from the nice-to-haves and the skip-its entirely, with our top product picks in each category.
The True Newborn Essentials
Safe Sleep Setup
A firm, flat sleep surface is the most important purchase you will make. A bassinet or crib with a fitted sheet is all you need. No bumpers, no positioners, no sleep wedges.
- Bassinet: Halo BassiNest or Babyletto Lolly
- Crib: IKEA SUNDVIK or Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1
- Fitted crib sheets (x3): Newton Baby or American Baby Company
Feeding Supplies
Whether you breastfeed, formula feed, or both, you will need a feeding setup. See our full breast pump and bottle guides for deep dives on each.
- Nursing pillow: Boppy or My Brest Friend (firmer support for newborns)
- Burp cloths (x8 minimum): Aden + Anais muslin
- Bottles (x4 to start): Comotomo or Dr. Brown’s
- Formula (if formula feeding): Ask your pediatrician for a recommendation before stocking up, as babies can have preferences.
Diapering
Diaper changes happen 8 to 12 times a day in the newborn stage. Having a well-stocked station saves your sanity at 2 a.m.
- Diapers: Start with a small pack of newborn size, but do not overstock: many babies skip newborn size or outgrow it quickly. Pampers Swaddlers are gentle on sensitive newborn skin.
- Baby wipes: WaterWipes (99.9% water, ideal for newborn skin) or Pampers Sensitive
- Diaper cream: Aquaphor or Boudreaux’s Butt Paste
- Changing pad: A simple waterproof pad works fine. No need for an elaborate changing table.
Clothing
Babies grow fast. Do not overbuy any single size. Focus on easy-access snaps at the bottom (not buttons), footed sleepers for easy diaper changes, and soft, washable fabrics.
- Onesies (x7 per size): Carter’s or Gerber
- Footed sleepers (x5 per size): Carter’s zip-up sleepers (zips are faster than snaps at night)
- Swaddle blankets (x4): Aden + Anais muslin swaddles
- Hats (x2 to 3): Hospitals often provide one; a couple of extras is plenty.
Bathing
- Infant tub: Blooming Bath (soft flower insert for kitchen sink) or Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Sling n Seat
- Baby wash and shampoo: CeraVe Baby or Aveeno Baby
- Hooded towels (x2): Any soft hooded towel
Health and Safety
- Thermometer: Frida Baby rectal thermometer (rectal is the most accurate for infants under 3 months)
- Nasal aspirator: FridaBaby NoseFrida is the one parents swear by
- Baby nail file or clippers: NailFrida
- Infant pain reliever: Ask your pediatrician before your baby is born which dosing to use, and have infant acetaminophen on hand.
Nice-to-Have Newborn Gear
- Bouncer or swing: 4moms mamaRoo or Graco DuetSoothe swing. Many babies are soothed by motion, but some are not: borrow if possible before buying.
- Baby carrier: Solly Baby wrap (newborns) or Ergobaby Omni 360 (birth through toddler)
- Baby monitor: See our full monitor guide for recommendations.
- White noise machine: See our full white noise guide.
- Play mat: Lovevery Play Gym is pricey but thoughtfully designed; Fisher-Price Deluxe Kick & Play is a solid budget option.
What to Skip
- Wipe warmers (your baby will adjust)
- Diaper Genie or specialty diaper pail (a regular small trash can with a lid works fine)
- Baby food maker (a blender you already own does the same job)
- Elaborate crib bedding sets (bumpers, comforters, and pillows are unsafe for infants)
- Newborn shoes (newborns do not walk; socks are sufficient)
- Baby cologne or powder (fragrance is hard on newborn skin; talc powder is a respiratory risk)
